this deviation is targeted towards televangelists and their viewers. sometimes i watch these shows to try to figure them out....to try to realize why about a third of our nation glues themselves to their televisions in search of god. now, of course, i realize that it might be a bit rude to criticize the spirituality of other people, but i feel that it is wrong to seek god through a cathode-ray tube. sure, there are some programs that seem fine to me (such as the old nuns and monks reading from the bible on some local channel), but i really have a problem with those overblown, money-driven shows delivered by people like peter popoff, jim bakker, jimmy swaggart, pat robertson, and jerry falwell. doesn't it seem wrong to own a huge media empire in the name of god? to convince your audinece to take 'jesus cruises' with you? to publish your own christian weight loss book? it is obvious that some of these televangelists sell god to their viewers with the primary goal of making the most money that they can off of their audience. with that in mind...can it really be said that these figureheads are truly christian? i don't think so. now...it really isn't my place to decide who is christian and who is not, but to me, a christian is someone who lives by the morals of the bible, and believes and jesus christ is their savior. all people who say they're christian partake in the latter part, but i find that an overwhelming amount of them dont live by the word of the bible. for instance, our lovely president, mr. bush, proclaims to be a christian. but would a true christian demand thousands of men to kill other men, some dying in the process? i don't think so. what about jerry falwell, one of the nation's most popular televangelists? this man ardently supported racial segregation in the 60's, blamed feminists, the ACLU, and gays for 9/11, and believes that americans should kill every terrorist in the world in the name of the lord. isn't it obvious, even to someone who hasn't read the bible, that this is not what a christian should believe? i think it's ridiculous that so many americans claim to be christian, but they live their lives however they please, saying that whatever sins they've committed have been forgiven by god. some of them haven't even read the bible. heck, i'd wager that MOST of them haven't read the bible. but anyway...i guess what all this nonsense is about is just to encourage people to practice what they preach. and also, to make sure you're preaching what you should be. if you're going to say you're a christian, then discipline yourself. make yourself into a better christian. dont hate, or argue, or hoard your money, or committ adultery. instead of just thinking that your sins are forgiven...force yourself to sin less. be a true christian instead of just a nominal one. and please, stop telling others what god's will is. and remember...humility is NOT a bad thing.

and yes, i know this will upset some of you, but i'm just speaking my mind. feel free to comment, but i would appreciate civility. all thoughts, criticism, opinions, and philosophical matter are welcome here. lastly, thanks for stopping by. i'm honored.

I totally agree....and the sad part is, I'm not a devout Christian. I believe that Christianity is a religion that readily embraces others...no matter who. We (or at least myself), I do not impose myself on anyone else unless they are willing to come to Christ. Christianity is not meant to shed so much blood, tears, or to spend and sometimes waste so much money...I humble myself enough, but for some of the more recent events...maybe it's time for me to stand, no?

I agree with what you said, and admire you even more for saying it. You are the first.

Hmmm, my comment must not have gotten through before....I agree so much with this peice. I was just talking with my friends yesterday about the stupidity that comes with televangelism. Im atheist, yet I believe everyone has ther right to believe what theyd like to believe, so you dont have to worry about offending me :)

freakin fuggin awesome. and your soapbox rally is worth the price of admission. nice one ray.

i am of two minds on modern religion. north american christianity preys on our fears. we all feel alone and lost and religion feeds our need to be connected. it makes the righteous feel right. those televangelists are terrorists in the worst sense because they lie to people and manipulate them with fear and guilt. bush does the same.

on the other hand, i don't actually look down on etremely religious people. faith like that does not come easy and to have true inner peace is very hard. nevertheless i do feel that religion is like the law in that it's designed to keep us in line, to set rules to make us easier to manage. i admire theologies such as buddhism but as a recovering catholic i can live without that kind of faith.

this piece is very effective ray. i like the resolution lines and the sheer simplicity of the message. reminds me of something i could see on the cover of the economist. i think it could be a bit darker or more contrasty, but that's just me. take a bow brotha.

beautiful, simple and overall the message is obvious! i agree with what you say, and though i'm not a very religious person i do go for the saying/proverb/whatchamacallit: "practice what you preach"

and of course no one can practice something like a religion constantly, 24/7, its just impossible (in my view), but people who say they do, should at least try.

Lets face it, if it was a case of Adam and Steve in the garden of eden, there'd be no apple eating.

They'd be too busy having sex.
